Compressing .AVI files, is it possible?

My Canon A40 digital camera will take a short video clip with sound. An 11 sec clip is 2.92MB.
Sending the clip by e-mail was aborted as taking forever and would be the same for the recipient.
Tried to compress it with WinZip but it was only a fraction smaller.
Is there any way to "compress" these files so they can be sent and received in a reasonable time

Use TEMPGEnc to re-encode to mpeg1 which will shrink the file dramatically.
