How do you know and how can I found out if the components I want to use to build my own pc will be compatible?

Compatible with what? each other, the OS?
Most new hardware will work with each other and OS with very few hiccups, maybe posting what components you mean may help.

ok.. this is one set of components i've been considering:
Mother board: ASUS SK8N (skt 940 opteron)
PSU: Enermax Noisetaker 600W ATX V2.0
CPU: AMD Opteron 244 1.8GHz
RAM: Kingston 1GB Kit PC3200
Optical Drive 1: LiteOn 16-48 DVD/CD Reader
Optical Drive 2: Pioneer DVR-109 D Special Edition
HDD: 250GB Maxtor D/Max +10 SATA / 7200 16M
Graphics Card: MSI GeForce 660 256Mb PCI-E
Sound Card: Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS (OEM)

One thing that isn't going to fit is the graphics card the SK8N has an AGP 8X graphics slot click here , so a PCI-E card just isn't going to fit. Other than that it looks OK

Will this graphics card do.. PNY Verto/GeForce 6600 8xAGP 128MB 256-bit DDR3 ,350mhz core clock ,with TV-out and DVI... ?? I saw somewhere a motherboard that would take 2 AMD Opteron 244's but i can't seem to find one on the store site i'm using.. any suggestions? (I'm using aria btw)
