Comparing inkjet printer print quality

Can anyone help. I'm looking to buy a multi functional inkjet, but as yet can't find any informative reviews. The problem I'm having is comparing print quality. Epson for example will quote up to 5760 dpi, whereas HP will quote for example 1400 x 1400 dpi. I'm not too bothered about scan quality 600 x 1200 dpi should be OK, but with two small children photo printing is high on the decision list.
Is for example the Epson Stylus CX3200 better than my old HP 930c when it comes to photo printing?

I can tell you from personal knowledge that the HP1210 is excellent at the budget end, and the 2110/2210 are truly first class.

PS - I would bet that your 930 is better than the epson CX3200.

Your HP 930c uses the same ink cartridges as the HP photo printers. Just keep your 930 until it gives up and you're forced to get a new one. No telling what will be out then and the improvements that will have been made.
