Combo drive has stopped reading CDs

I have an HP Pavilion zt3010EA laptop with a Teac DW-224E combo drive running XP SP2. The laptop is 12 months old. It has suddenly stopped reading CDs but will read a DVD. On inserting a CD, it tries three times to fire up the drive then stops. Control panel recognizes the drive and shows no problems. Windows explorer finds the drive but says it is empty.
Any ideas please (apart from taking it back under warranty which I might have to do but don't want to)? Thanks
