Comatose Computer

Checking on my daughters desktop this morning I noticed that it was incredibly sluggish - to start, to load startup programs, and to open selected programs. It is an e-machine [PC World] model 370 - 128mb of ram, 1.7ghz processor, 40gb hard disk.I have run check disk, defrag, spybot, ad-aware and ms[giant] anti spyware [all these programs updated], plus AVG anti virus, and ccleaner. There is a zone alarm firewall plus the firewall on the wireless modem/router [installed on the main computer in another room]. I've also looked at the startup list and weeded it back to about seven items.

The machine runs XP home, SP2 with all updates installed.

Any further suggestions, please?

Is it worse than it was? - or just slow compared with what you are used to.

WinXP with 128Mb RAM is likely to be slow - XP really needs a minimum of 256Mb, and better to use 512Mb.

Thanks DieSse - just back from PC World with a 512 stick - will try that.

Don't forget to take the usual anti-static precautions.
