COM Port Conflict

I've recently installed software for internet banking with a high-street bank, but I can't connect to the bank's server (I get a 'Port error') because apparently there is a software application that is using the modem. I think that this may be a fax application but I can't work out how to check if this is right, or how to disable it if necessary. I've tried disconnecting my PC from everything that I thought could be interferring: I am networked to 3 other PCs in our office, and the shared printer/fax machine is connected to my PC.
If anyone has any helpful ideas they would be well received!
