CMOS/GPNV checksum bad. What is this?

Hi pc experts, on start up i sometimes get the message CMOS/GPNV checksum bad, F1 to load default settings or F2 to enter settings. When i go to bios settings everything is defaulted, date, time, values etc. When i correct the settings the sys starts up as normal, but its happening more and more often. What is this?

It may be the mobo battery is on its way out.
