CMOS battery? Possibly not

My desktop running xp home sp3 is having recurrent boot failure usually due to missing keyboard. The CMOS clock also resets. I've tried five different CMOS button batteries from different suppliers and each time the same problem recurs after a short period. Is this likely to be motherboard failure and if so is there a definitive way to confirm without a whole lot of work? Many thanks

have you checked the keyboard plug is not loose
and have you checked the RAM memory is firmly in, try reseating it (take out and put back in)

Is it a usb keyboard and are you able to enter the BIOS and check the settings?

There may be something on click here that will help you troubleshoot motherboard/bios
