Cloning Hard Drives

I want to clone a laptop hard drive, but the way it has been set up, you cannot access certain areas of the hard drive without an administrator password which I no longer have.

It is not required to operate the programs I wish to make use of, however, this does prevent me from accessing files and folders etc.

Do I need access to all areas of the laptop hard drive to be able to clone it? Ideally, what I want to do is backup the hard drive onto a desktop pc with a larger faster drive and do away with the laptop.

I know you can purchase cloning/imaging/ghost software which will do this, but is full access to the laptop required?

Would very much appreciate any help you have to offer.

Gary Lucas.
