Clicking screensaver tab=freeze

When l click the screensaver tab in control panel the computer freezes and the only way to get a response is to press the restart/reset button on the front. Also if the comp is left idle for about 20-30 mins the screen shuts down but the comp is still running and the same thing applies, reset/restart button is the only way to get it to respond, any ideas? Thanks in advance.

You don't say which operating system you are running, but it sounds as though the problem could at least partly relate to the power management facility in Windows. I am running Windows 98 SE and if you right click on the desktop, go to 'Properties', 'Screensaver', and then open the 'Settings' dialogue box there are various options there. For a start you could try setting screen saver to none, as they are not really necessary. At the same time alter the monitor power saving options so the monitor never goes off. You can always power off the monitor manually if leaving it for a while. If clicking the 'Screensaver' tab this way also locks it up, power management is also available through 'Contol Panel'. Good luck.
