Clicking HDD

  Dirk Diggler 20:27 12 Aug 07

Just been called to a relatives house as his PC will not boot

On powering up the message "Please insert boot diskette into A drive and press any key"

If I go into set up under Primary Master is has "Auto-detect" selected and next to that it states "none detected"

In the boot sequence options it will only allow me to choose between the A (Floppy) and D (CD) drives - no option of C drive.

However, what really makes me think it is destined for the hard drive graveyard is a constant ticking from the HDD itself!!!

So my question(s) are - does it sound like the HDD is dead and if so is there any way data (ie, photos etc) can be retrieved from it)

PS. I have also checked all connections IDE, Power etc

Many thanks

Remove the drive and use a usb caddy to try and reclaim the data,or place the drive in another pc as slave to regain the data.
Though you maybe to late if the drive is dead.

Sounds like the MBR is corrupt, try Seatools or TestDisk to put it right

Download the one you want Floppy or CD click here
