Click which opens a pciture elsewhere on the scree

Yet another apparently silly question....

... I was looking through a subsite which I did with frames. I have quite a nice effect where the long text is in the left half of the screen. Every now and then you have the option of clicking to load a picture, if you want to see it; the picture loads into the right, the frame being set up that way. So it doesn't disrupt the text; and if you only want to read, you can.

Is it possible to get the same effect without frames? To make it clear, I'll repeat, you're basically reading stuff, then come in the text to an invitation to click, and if you to the piccy appears on the same screen, but in its own window, leaving the text alone....

CSS -- click here (that uses hover) -- or Javascript.

Ah kemistri, thanks. Disjointed rollover. Hm. I suppose I could allocate a space for piccies... Thanks.
