clear out the tray beside clock

Hi, Can anyone help with this?

I have so much stuff cluttering up this tray that it is extremly annoying waiting for it all to open.

I especially am sick of msn messanger poping up everytime I start the computer.
I have tried going into msconfig from Run and clicking the startup tag and then unchecking messenger, but it came back into the tray again as soon as I opened messanger.

Is there any way to keep it from opening at startup, but without getting rid of it altogether as I do use it.

there certainly is

go to start>run type msconfig

now go to the start up tab and uncheck all the programmes that you do not want to run

Open Messenger and on the menu go to Tools>Options. Select the "General" tab and uncheck the "Run Messenger when Windows starts" Box.
