clean install -closing all programs beforehand

Have just upgraded to WinXPhome from win98 and want to make sure I install programs cleanly. Now when I press CtrAltDel I get a list of applications running (none) but there is also another list of processes running. Do I need to stop these? How do I know which ones it is ok to stop? Do I really need them anyway?
Sorry to be such an ignoramus!

Processes are needed otherwise XP would not run. You can just leave it or you can reduce the number of processes click here
