Cine film to video flicker

  Pineapple 14:46 20 Dec 05

Some years ago I transferred some cine film to analogue video on VHS. I have recently copied them to “mpg” files on my PC. I have burned these to DVD, using Ulead’s “Video Studio 9”. This works well with just a little flicker (brightness variations) when replaying on the computer.

However the flicker seems much worse when re-playing the DVD on a TV. I appreciate the clash between 18fps (film) and 25fps on PAL is most likely the main problem. I have tried running it though Ulead’s “auto-exposure” and “auto-level” filters, in VS9’s editing section, without success.

Does anyone know of any clever ways of smoothing out some of the flicker, apart from re-doing the telecine transfer?
