choosing a portable hard drive

A few weeks ago my 160Gb hard drive packed up and I'm having to replace it. Fortunately, I'd been diligently backing up my personal files to CDs and DVDs. However, now that the horse has bolted, I've decided that I'll get a portable hard drive (say 80-100Gb)to have a full backup of the new hard disk (including the operating system XP Home) against any future disasters. Can anyone recommend a suitable drive and would I need additional software, please?
