Choice of which HDD

I am building a new rig and on my old system I have a 160gid hdd and an 80. I am wondering whether to ditch the 80 and get a 250gig external to partition into two and have it as a back up with one partion of 160 and use the other partion 90gig for whatever. Is this sensible and if so can you point me in the right direction of the best to get.
Current HDD's are Maxtor 6L160PO ultra-ata133 with 8mb buffer and a Seagate Barracuda ultra-ata100 with 2mb buffer.

There is no point or advantage in partitionng an external drive. You can run apps from it quite happily. If I were buying one I would be getting this 300Gb HD for £70 here Don't worry about speeds/buffers, mere mortals will notice no difference apart from bragging rights.
