chkdsk screen frozen after running chkdsk

  Curio 20:28 15 Jul 04

Have just run chkdsk and computer advises running chkdsk with /f option to fix, as Windows found problems with file system.
This refuses to run as volume is in use.
Clicking on Y to chkdsk on next restart does nothing.
Typing win or exit just creates the previous paragraph. Have to 'X' out and end programme.
On restart computer boots and runs ok but there is no option for the chkdsk to run beforehand.
Any offers on a cure for this please?
