Can anyone out there recommend a decent CD burner that is compatible with Windows 98. Most of the review sites seem to make use of Windows XP so it has proved difficult for me to find reference to performance under 98.

If you look on any box, it should tell you which operating system(s) it will work with. Frankly, I've bought and fitted many, all to 98SE systems and never had a single problem. The driver that comes with the OS works to get it up as a CD player, then the provided software provides the burning. Ideally, look out for bundled Nero.

Nero works a treat on 98SE, in fact I use it with 98lite and no problem.

Your CD burner (a top notch current model is about £40 to £50 at present) will work perfectly well with Windows98SE using the standard Windows CDROM driver; most rewriters come with Nero that is dedicated to your particular model and which can be updated at the ahead website.

Re Lite-On rewriters - these are mostly rebadged models from other specialist manufacturers, a common practice in the computer industry for a variety of products. They are good value for money though.

I've had two TDK Vortex rewriters (both Plextor manufacturered) and currently a CyCline, which is Samsung based.

To find out who actually manufactures CD-ROMs, rewriters etc and which companies rebadge them under their own name, visit click here

CD/RW drives will work with any O/S. You can get some good deals from click here or click here cost about £35.
