Changing a PSU

I need to fit a more powerful PSU having fitted a new graphics card in. Firstly, any idea why? Have a 250w in at the moment, but Gforce docs say 300w minimum. Seems to be working at the moment though. Secondly, what does ATX type mean? does this mean my bog standard eMachine desktop? and do these things come with the relevent cables? (that should have been thirdly, of course!)

As long as the machine is running stable don't bother changing ( I am using Gforce fx 5200 with 150 watt psu without problems) but if you do change it all the cables that you need come with the power source.

Thanks everyone, good advice and useful links. Very taken with the neon fan on one of the PSU's: how shallow does that make me, exactly?
