I am in the middle of doing the same, using a trial version of Adobe Encore DVD, which is able to import the avi files, produce a professional looking navigable menu, then 'transcode'(the changing from AVI to DVD bit), and burn the lot to a blank DVD.
Be warned, transcoding, then burning about 40 minutes worth of video takes up over 3Gb on a 4.7Gb DVD, and takes about 90 minutes to complete. But it works!
I am sure others will post concerning alternative software. Good Luck!
