Changing from Me to XP

I'm just about to do the changeover to XP and I'd like advice on how to keep my existing programs on the computer without having to format the hard disk when I put in XP. Do I have to back everything up onto CDs etc and then reinstall programs? This would be a real hassle especially for my McAfee Anti Virus software as I have nearly a year of updates on the computer.
Any ideas gratefully appreciated.

You can upgrade with the XP disk but best to be backed up first .

Run the xp compatability wizard of the xp cd first see if anythink should be changed/updated,you may get the option to save your original set up before xp installs then if things dont go well uninstall xp,that is if your upgrading not starting with a blank hdd.

When windows is running, pop in your XP disc and select install windows.

This will install XP over the top.

I would back up your important documents though
