I have the latest nvida general driver installed.

replacing faulty nvidia 6600 card with a nvida 7600gs card is there any need to delete the driver before installing the new card?

I have just replaced 6600 with 8800gts and the answer is yes (the manual recommends/states) you have to uninstall all graphic card drivers before proceeding with new install.

its the same driver as long as you are using xp, force ware covers all latest cards, the only exceptions are 8800gts and gtx as these cards still have compatibily issue with some games.

If it's a replacement card, then I would uninstall the drivers (Add and Remove Programs) and start afresh. Won't take long and can't do any harm.
