Changing a file or folder name makes it unstable

  Newuser2 15:12 05 Apr 04

When I change the name of a file or folder I get a message saying that the file or folder may become unstable if I continue, & if I continue the folder or file then changes & I have to open it using the "open with" application.
This has only happened laterly as I never used to have any trouble.
I'm using Lotus Smart Suite on a 500 P111 running win ME.
Any help would be greatfully recieved.

shouldn't apply to folders, but you may of enabled the 'file extension' view,

this means filenames will include the extensions at the end of the name, (eg .jpeg .bmp .wmv) and when renaming, that extension has to be included.(otherwise the file may become unusable, and 'open with' will keep popping up)

to resolve it, open 'my computer' click on tools\folder options\view, then put a tick in the 'hide file extensions for known file types' box.

Thanks crx1600.
I did what you advised & it worked.
I didn't untick the box at any time in the past so I have no idea how it got altered.
Just one of those things I guess.
Thanks again.
