Changing Defaults in MS Word 2003

I have attempted to change the default font and page size in Word, by clicking on 'Default' and agreeing the changes. However, on opening Word again the MS defaults ( Times New Roman and page size - Letter )are in place.
I understand that 'normal.dot' is difficult to access in newer versions of Word. I have tried opening 'Templates' and changing the defaults that way, but 'Normal.dot'is unavailable.
I am running XP Pro and have Admin Rights.
Any ideas much appreciated
