Assumming a SATA drive and XP cannot find the drive?

Go into BIOS (F2)and disable SATA,save and exit (F10), the XP CD should now see the dive and allow you to format and install XP.

even when you boot from the cdrom.

You have to format the drive, through third party software click here, then boot from cdrom with the XP disk and delete the partition on the hard drive. You the rebuild the hard drive through the XP install.

You will need all of the XP drivers for the laptop plus the SATA drivers before you load XP.

First you will need an XP CD.

When you boot from it, it will enable you to re-partition and format. You don't need any other software.

As above - make sure you have (assuming they're available) all the XP drivers for your laptop.

There's lots of help if you google, for various issues that can arise - see this sample thread which tells you how to change the BIOS in some laptops so that you can easily use SATA drives.
