change file type

how do i change the file extension of a media file.
i addthe extension to the end of the name but it does not change the filetype only the name. where do i go within xp to change the file type.

You can't just change a filetype by simply changing the extension, the file has to be converted using appropriate software.

why are you trying to change extensions / file type
it may render the file unusable

If you want to see what filetype a file is presently, open "My Computer", go to Tools > Folder Options > View tab, then untick the "Hide extensions for known filetypes" option, click Apply and OK to exit.
