I am using M/S Excell and the balance sheet template keeps using the $ sign when I type in £
sign.I have used the "Ask a question " portion in XL but nothing happens. It stays on £ untill I move onto a second line and then it converts the lot to $

OK, Control Panel, Regional and Language, Regional Options, choose English United Kingdom. Same in Advanced. Click on Apply, OK each time.

First unprotect the sheet using Tools / Protection / Unprotect sheet, then you should be able to format the cells any way you want

Hi Graham and Andy,
I have tried the lot and even some boxes that came to light as the result of trying, but NO.
I enter the ? in the first column and when I enter the item in the second it clicks over to the D... $$$

  Samuel Gee 11:23 29 Oct 03

The ? should have been ?

I can't even get the pound sign now.

OK, you need VoG. Suggest you click this as resolved and start a new subject with 'Excel' in the title.

Just seen your last post. I've not seen this before, could it be a virus?

There seems to be something odd about that template. I've managed to get it to work as follows.

Unprotect the sheet.

Select all the cells where currency should be and select Format/Cells and choose Number.

Then Format/Cells and select Currency.
