where would a cfg file be placed in windows xp i have a bit of software but i have to manualy install this file help much appreciated

Could be almost anywhere - a .cfg file is a configuration file, not a help file.

Which software?

If it's third party software you're installing, try putting the file in the folder where the program files are placed, or in a subfolder. Usually, it's c:\program files\[name of software].

But as VoG says, someone might help if you say what software.
