Centrino, what's it for?

  Rogmur 23:32 25 Jan 06

Hi Forum Members

My wife has just bought a laptop which has a Centrino processor.
Thing is I am completely unfamiliar about this type of processor.
I know you can (supposedly) surf the web at certain hotspots.
When I boot up the laptop it searches for a "wireless network connection" and then reports;
"Security Enabled Wireless Network,
This Network Requires a Network Key".

Does this mean that if I had a network key I could surf the web "wirelessly"?

I would really appreciate any advice

Kind regards

contains a wireless network adapter that will enable her to access the internet wirelessly, provided the machine is within range of a wireless router or gateway.

What's happening is that the computer is detecting a wireless network within range, and is reporting that the network is secure. That means that you cannot access it without the encryption key that has been set by the owner. If you live in a town or city it's now very common to find that neighbouring houses have wireless routers running, and that's undoubtedly the case here.

The reason that the network is secured is to prevent unauthorised people in neighbouring properties from using it.

If you have a broadband connection at home you could use the laptop to surf the internet from any room in the house, provided you installed your own wireless router.

Many Thanks to Belatucadrus and the Forum Editor

for you help.

I would like to try connecting to my Broadband modem using the laptop, but where does the Wireless router connect to?
