Centralised Printing On Large Networks

For those of you who are eagle-eyed, yes this another network question, but now I'm wearing my work cap!

At work, a 1000 user secondary school, we are about to have a new network set up. Wiring, etc is all complete. To reduce costs printing is to be centralised to specific laser printers. Can each user's username be automatically printed on every page? By all, I would like all software to to do this, not just Microsoft's suite.

This is a tall order I know, but if anyone knows how to manage such a mass of printing from such a large volume of users I will be very grateful.
