Maybe audio is corrupt.

If you have the disk for a Factory restore or maybe just reinstall you Windows Media Player ?

Ideally more info on you Laptop would help me or others reading here give you better support.

Make & Model of Laptop, Which Windows, what application your using for playing the CD's which I guess are Audio ?

Roughly an age of the Laptop ?

It is an Advent 7004 (from 2002), im using Windows XP and i've tried using various programmes to play discs but having no joy.

It is trying to start up and you hear a noise and a whirring but it clicks and fades to a stop.

Johnny, yes i have installed sp2.

Just tried to play some freebie pc software discs and they are ok, so the problem seems to be just music cds.

Are your CD's meia protected as this will stop them playing on your PC
