My machine cannot recognize any cd/dvd I put in; whether -r or +r. Always the message is my drive is empty.

Does it pick up original, manufactured discs (ie not writeable)?

That is a CD with a little brush and tube of fluid.
If that does not do the trick assume the laser has died and fit new unit.
Not expensive not difficult to do

It does pick uo originals, brundle.

And nero did write on it. But not windows on programme.
