CDRW/DVD inconsistancies

I've got a Dell Dimension 3000 running Windows XP.
The TSS Corp. CDRW/DVD has become erratic. If I put a CD-ROM or DVD of any kind in the tray it will 9 times out of ten read it and fire up normally but increasingly lately it will not respond to some discs no matter what I do, but if I put in a disc that has functioned before it will fire up normally. Could this be signs of impending disaster?

Could it be the disks that are faulty?

I don't think it is the discs, as some of the discs that misbehave now were alright back-along. Also I don't think I'm getting an increasing number of faulty discs coming my way. I did try a different approach since my first posting. I fired up one of the good discs about 6 or 7 times then put one of the misbehaving discs in and it too fired up... weird!
