On my Windows XP SP2 system I have just completed a restoration of system files only keeping my data safe.

All seems fine but all three CD/DVD drives have the exclamation mark on them in device manager and therefore are not seem by my OS.

Any advice on how to get them back again would be greatly appreciated.

Right click on the drives in device manager and then click uninstall and then restart the computer

Just tried that and, although they reappeared, they still had the exclamation mark on them.

When I insert a disk, the drives starts but Windows doesn't recognise that it exists.

I will look through start up progs to see if anything is missing.

kinger,

the autoplay repair tool from m/soft may help with your problem. click here

My drives are not listed when I run that program.

Something seems to be blocking Windows from finding them.

They are listed in Device Manager as:
Pioneer DVD RW DVR-109
Sony DVD RW DW-22A
VBE HH DVD-ROM DVD-50D SCSI cdrom Device

Hope this helps.

I am getting a message when I try to uninstall programs.

"The windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occurr if you are running Windows in safe mode (which I'm not) or if the Windows installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance".

Could the Windows installer not be albe to install my CD drives, do you think?

is this resolved?

I have a fix which involves going into the registry

If you are confident enough then i will tell you what to do
