the cd/dvd drive appears to have completely vanished off my desktop computer.i have looked in device manager i looked in hardware.what do you think has happened am i going to have to buy a replacement

You may just have a loose cable. Open the case, and re-seat the cables for power and data to the drive.

If that fails, then yes, it's likely that you need a replacement.

i checked the cable connections they ok.so looks like i have to buy a new dvd drive.are they difficult to install?.

i already tryed the repair software made no difference drive still not there.so i have to buy a new dvd drive.i noticed the internal ones are cheaper than external ones

Make sure you buy the correct model for your system (SATA or IDE)

Then just unscrew, replace the cables at the new drive end, and off you go.
