CD/DVD combo burner goes part-time

I have been asked about this and I am stumped, but I am sure one of you is not.
A DVD/CD combo- has stopped reading CD's
but continues reading /playing DVD's
I initially suggested a lens clean - but if it is stopping CD's and not carrying on with DVD's not really an answer-
Then I thought - software- but no- if it had been the other way round -plays Cd's but not DVD's - yes lack of software- but not to play Cd's and Ok with DVD is funny one- or is it?

It sounds like the CD reading laser has died, jack, but the DVD reading laser is still OK.

Latest model DVD rewriters are as cheap as chips these days (under £20), so a replacement would seem to be in order - as MAJ points out it appears that the CD laser has gone kaput in your present drive.

Rewriters are not as robust as basic CD or DVD-ROM optical drives as manufacturers' MTTF/MTBF figures clearly show.

The reason for two lasers is that two different wavelengths are used to read CD and DVD disks.

Thank you Both
I shall pass it on
