CD writers and the command prompt

I've got an issue (running in another thread) relating to registry problems with Windows XP. This means that at present all I can get is the command prompt via the recovery console. I've got a backup of most of the important stuff on the PC, but there are some other files I'd ideally like to get off before potentially repairing/reinstalling XP.

The PC has a CD-writer installed, but I haven't found a way of writing to it from the command prompt. Is it possible to use the CD-writer, or is there another way of copying reasonable numbers of files off the PC without using Windows?
