cd writer not recognised in XP

hey everyone, managed to rig up me new system..

Only problem is im using my old cdrw drive, but it wont show in my computer or anywhere. its all connected correctly, but it wont show in XP, or the BIOS. When i did get it to work, it wouldnt pick up any discs hardly...Any ideas greatly appreciated as i cant isntall anything,,,,,

If XP doesn't detect it and it doesn't appear in Bios then its one of 3 things, either there is no power to it or the IDE cable is broken or not connected properly ot the CD writer has passed on to a better place, it is an ex cd writer and needs replaced. I'd try the replacing the IDE cable first.

Ive tried the IDE and power cable with an ancient 7yr old cd rom drive n it works fine. i cant use it tho cos the cd rom dirve old and it doesnt pick hardly anything up...The cd writer worked fine b4 i moved it into the new PC. i copied a few discs etc day before and everything was a-ok.
