CD-RW read errors

New system, win XP, firmware upgrade of LG 8481B CD-RW to 1.02. Getting cannot read from disk errors, some disks read ok, some the light just pulses regularly and after about 5-10 secs the error is reported. Did the same before the firmware upgrade. No problems reported in Ctl Panel. Drive is set as master on secondary IDE. Any ideas?

Try uninstalling it from Device manager and re boot reinstall drivers if asked to, I had the same problem with my cd/r/w seem to be a conflict with xp and the drivers that came with the cd/r/w

Tried that earlier (tried it again) still no joy, still getting "The system cannot read from the specified device".

You said on SOME disks are they ones you have made in the past or ready made(Music or Data ) cd's?
I get that prblem somtimes when I don'd finish off the disk when burning.

No these are new and old disks, homemade and readymade. I'm currently trying to find a different driver, but no luck yet.

Sounds like a drive problem to me.

Mmmmm thats what I was starting to suspect as well. (New drive as well).

Tried it on my other PC (XP as well)and it did the same, eventually tried it on primary as slave and it worked fine. Just don't know why it didnt like being master on secondary!

Optical drives have a general reputation of being picky about where and how they are connected. Their interface is not the same as a Hard Drive - which is why the general feeling is that you shouldn't mix them on the same IDE cable.

Glad you fixed it without needing a new drive.

PS - meant to add - you might like to try it as slave on the secondary channel.
