CD-RW not reading new cds

My 4 year old CD-RW is playing up. I recorded an LP (remember those?) on to my hard drive and tried to burn the WAV file onto CD using NTI software when I hit problems. It refused to recognise the existence of the CD-RW although the simulate function said the trial was fine. NTI's site's FAQs suggested replacing the aspi layer and I duly followed the instructions. Not only did it not work, but since the CD-RW will not play new software (a game and Audiolab) though it will install the software. The error reads "Unable to authenticate original disc within time limit." Audio Cds still play. I am running Win 98 SE.
