CD ROM Wont Read or play

All of a sudden my cdrom has stopped working when i check my devices manager and click on Cd it say it is working however when i put in a disc either software or music the icon in my computer shows no disc when i click it says plaese insert a disc but there is already one in I have checked the bios settings and it states the device is enabled can anyone give any pointers to what could have gone wrong

Could be as simple as dirt on lens. You can get a CD drive cleaner from PC World/Woolworths etc.

I would try that first before trying anything else

Even thoygh its says OK in device manager - uninstall the drive also uninstall the IDE channel the drive is on.

Reboot the PC let XP find and install new hardware.
Retry your disks.

An optical drive can be listed as working OK but still have packed up.

If it doesn't work after uninstalling from Device Manager and rebooting, then it is likely it has done so.

You can buy a CD-ROM (or better a DVD-ROM drive) for around £12-£15 these days.
