CD Rom Speed Limited

My current system (Windows XP SP2) has 2 hard drives on controller 0 and 2 optical drives on controller 1. I have a DVD writer and until yesterday a rather old Acer CD writer on the same controller. When copying data from the CD writer to the DVD writer, it only copies from the CD at 6x speed. I have replaced the CD writer with a 52x speed CD Rom but this still only reads at 8 speed. If I copy from the DVD writer to itself, it imports the data from the cd at full speed (24x). How can I get the CD rom to go faster?

it might be that this is the maximum speed it can operate at on that ide cable?

Does that suggest a cable fault or controller fault? The motherboard is only about 18 months old.

Have tried different cable but still shows as 8x speed maximum?
