CD ROM or DVD for backing up data

Some computing mags advocate storing data on DVD rather than CD but don't offer an explanation as to why. Anyone offer an explanation, please?

This is one of those cases where size matters !!!

700 MB on a CD ROM.

Over 4 GB on a DVD

DVD wtiters & media are very cheap these days, a CD will hold 700mb a DVD will hold 4.7 gb before formatting (approx 4.38gb after formatting I think}.

I've said this before but, I wouldn't even store a shopping list on either CD or DVD.

Both have a tendency to become unreadable on storage thus anything on them is lost.
