CD rom not reading CD-RW disc

I have an antique cd rom drive . It works perfectly for all read only (i.e. pre-recorded) cd's. It also reads CD-R with no problem. However , it doesn't see CD-RW's which I know have been written to. All I get is a 'device not ready' message box.I'm also running
98SE so is there some formatting problem here? Any ideas gratefully received. Thanks

The drive is too old to support CDRW. If you have Nero, run Infotool.exe and it will tell you what features the drive has.

Many old CD drives will not read RWs. It is a combination of a weak laser and shallow data.

Plus low level reflectivity levels of CD-RWs compared to CD-Rs, which is why many older drives cannot read them.

A DVD-ROM drive is a better bet, will be well under £20 and you could add a CD rewriter for a similar price, using the ROM drive for installing software, listening to audio, watching DVDs etc.
