cd rom- Not Atapi compatible

I cannot get my pc to recognise either a CDROM or DVD on the second channel. It does not matter whether I set it as a slave or master, and makes no difference if a hard drive is master/slave on that channel.
My OS is W2k,
The drives have both worked in the past.
I seem to remember that the DVD writer had to be a master.

The DVD writer is an NEC.

does bios recognise the CD drive?

Yes, They are both recognised in the BIOS, but when the Startup screen pops up it says:
Secondary Master : Not Atapi Compatible
Secondary Slave : Not Atapi Compatible

This is the same for either the CD Writer or the DVD writer regardless whether they are on the Secondary channel alone or even with another HDD.
