when playing music cds on the rom there is a loud whirring noise how can i rectify this?

Copy the CDs to the hdd using something like Winamp and then play from hdd.

If you don't want to copy to the HD try CD Bremse

which is a little utility that slows down the speed at which your CD Rom drive spins and with it the noise that is ommited from the drive. Its also hady if you want to watch a DVD without been bothered by drive noise.

Alternatively try Nero Drive Speed which does much the same job, but from personal experience I have found CD Bremse easier in use.
