cd rom /rw seems to have packed up its not showing in 'my computer' but it is in device manager with yellow exclamation mark.whe I open this I get 'Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)'.I have tried new hardware wizard and update driver, have uninstalled- reinstalled and tried system restore, still the same. o/s is win xp pro. Is it time for a new drive? this one about 18 month old.

Try removing the CDRW from Device Manager then reboot comp and try it again

Try a system restore if woodchip's advice does not work.

Try a new Ribbon cable on the Drive

What model is it? Post the details and we can direct you to a driver download...if that fails it would appear to be a new one would be required.

CDRW do not need drivers windows provides the read driver with MSCDEX, and the RW driver is provided by the Burning software
