CD ROM fault

I am having intermittent problem with my CD Drives, a Plextor 16/10/40A and a Samsung DVD player. Sometimes they detect CD ROMs but not always. They play music OK and all the drivers are installed and am told the devices are working correctly. Will a longer data cable affect the operation, I have moved them apart to keep the temperature down. I recall reading something about too long a cable, am I right?
Setup is Win2000 Pro, 768 MBRAM with a 950 chip.

Don't know about Plextor, but RICOH recommend a cable no longer than 18" and shorter is better.
