CD re-write software

Someone told me that Windows XP, which has built-in support for CD-RW disks, writes then in a different way to programmes such as Adaptec Easy CD. I've found that I don't have to format CD-RW disks with XP as I did with Adaptec, which is nice. Are there any downsides to using XP for this? You don't always get something for nothing you see...

Never done it but it is possible that you may only be able to read the disc on xp systems, not really sure.
